FAQ

  • Matrix Seating USA is a leading innovator in CUSTOM wheelchair seating and positioning technology. Built on decades of clinical research and user-centered design, Matrix combines advanced 3D printing, multi-density elastomer and nylon materials to create seating solutions that are as individual as the users themselves.

Every Matrix product, from our AIREZ or PROTEUS cushions and back supports to our adjustable hardware and accessories, is engineered for comfort, durability, unmatched airflow, and infection control, ensuring optimal performance in clinical and everyday settings.

Partnering with clinicians, ATPs, and medical equipment providers nationwide, Matrix Seating USA is redefining what it means to deliver truly custom support: one user, unique shape, one solution at a time.

  • Each Matrix cushion is uniquely created using either a shape capture app (AIREZ), or our Tailored-by-Number measurement method (PROTEUS). Both approaches allow our design team to build a precise digital model, 3D print it with our proprietary elastomer blend, and deliver a personalized cushion with targeted pressure relief, unmatched airflow, and waterproof durability.

  • Users with complex postural needs, long sitting durations, skin integrity risks as well as anyone who hasn’t found success with off the shelf or custom foam/gel/air cushions would benefit from a Matrix Seating USA custom system.

  • No. Matrix Seating USA has no size or weight limitations. Every cushion and back support is custom-designed and engineered to meet the unique needs of each user, regardless of body size or weight.

  • Lead times vary by configuration and volume. Your rep can share current production timelines and rush options.

  • Yes, Clinicians can fine-tune in clinic using a heat gun, and a jigsaw. Matrix Seating USA offers certification classes to teach proper techniques in modifying both AIREZ and PROTEUS cushions and back supports. Please reach out to your dealer for more information on a certification class near you.

  • AIREZ is Matrix Seating USA’s signature custom product line, 3D printed seating technology across cushions (AIREZ 2.0) and back supports (AIREZ), designed to deliver unmatched airflow, durability, precise contouring, and adjustability.

  • AIREZ 2.0 features the Golden Ratio, a proprietary multi-density elastomer lattice that blends soft, medium, and firm transitionary zones within a single structure. This advanced design provides targeted pressure relief, full-surface stability, and long-term shape retention; all while delivering a noticeably more comfortable and responsive feel for the user.

  • AIREZ’s open, hollow cell lattice promotes 360° airflow. Every micro-movement circulates air, helping dissipate heat and manage moisture for a healthier skin microclimate.

  • Yes, the non-porous elastomer core is hydrophobic and doesn’t absorb fluids. The open cell structure makes it easy to clean with soap and water. Most cleanups take minutes.

  • The elastomer lattice flexes and recovers without collapsing like foam or shifting like gel/air bladders. AIREZ back shells use a proprietary nylon composite, strong yet flex-friendly for alignment under load.

    • AIREZ cushion: Multi-density elastomer lattice with pressure-relieving zones, airflow, and whole-surface stability.

    • AIREZ back support: Nylon-composite shells allow for flexibility and strength.

  • AIREZ combines the best features of all three technologies into one intelligent, customizable design.

Each cushion is 3D printed with a proprietary blend of soft, medium, and firm elastomer fibers, precisely arranged to create built-in pressure relief zones that support posture and shock absorption while minimizing peak pressures. The open lattice structure promotes continuous airflow, keeping the user cooler and drier throughout the day, and the waterproof, non-porous core simplifies cleaning and infection control.

Unlike foam that degrades, gel that shifts, or air cells that leak, AIREZ maintains consistent performance and shape over time, delivering a truly custom fit, superior durability, and long-term clinical reliability, redefining what users and clinicians can expect from seating technology.

  • AIREZ is built with infection control in mind. Unlike traditional foam cushions, AIREZ has no porous materials to absorb fluids, eliminating a common source of contamination. Its non-porous, hydrophobic elastomer core resists moisture and bacteria, allowing for rapid wipe-down and disinfection between users. Designed to meet modern clinical hygiene protocols, AIREZ supports cleaner, safer care environments without compromising comfort or performance.

  • No, Matrix also offers the PROTEUS product line.

  • PROTEUS uses our Tailored-by-Number methodology to create custom cushions and back supports. No scan app is required. Your ATP/clinician takes precise body measurements and clinical notes. Our design team then takes the data and builds a precise digital model. If needed, an ATP/clinician can fine-tune the fit easily during the delivery.

PROTEUS is available in two material options:

    • Same elastomer fibers also found in the AIREZ line, utilizing the proprietary Golden Ratio for maximum airflow, targeted pressure relief, strength, and postural stability while maintaining long-term shape and comfort.

    • Polyurethane (PU) open cell foam: porous, cellular structure that is compressive and breathable and allows for a soft, comfortable end-feel.

      • Posture+ for more aggressive contouring for clients with more postural plus skin protection needs

      • Relief+ for more immersive properties for skin protection

      • Optional Ultra gel insert at pelvic well. Ultra gel is a zero rebound gel that allows near perfect shock absorption and is impervious to the cold.

  • Matrix’s Radian 360 hardware is the most versatile and adjustable. It offers multi-axis adjustability to achieve precise positioning and alignment. Adjustments include:

    • Radial Rotation: Accommodates lateral lean or spinal asymmetry

    • Horizontal Rotation: Compensates for scoliosis or oblique posture

    • Angle Rotation: Allows posterior or anterior tilt for optimal trunk alignment

    • Depth Adjustment: Adds or reduces up to 1.5 inches of seat-to-back depth

    • Offset (Left/Right) Adjustment: Moves the back support off-center to fine-tune balance

    • Width Adjustment: Precise width adjustment at the crossbar wings allow Matrix back supports to fit various wheelchair frame sizes without compromising strength or simplicity.

Together, these options let clinicians fine-tune pelvic and trunk support for unmatched comfort, symmetry, and stability.

  • Yes, Matrix AIREZ and PROTEUS cushions and back supports qualify as custom-fabricated seating under Medicare Policy A52505. They meet CMS definitions for E2609 (seat) and E2617 (back), which require fabrication using a digital scan (shape capture app) or detailed measurements (Tailored-by-Number). Both methods create a one-of-a-kind cushion designed for each individual user and are fully compliant with Medicare’s custom fabricated criteria.

  • Under Medicare Policy A52505, coverage is now based on clinical need, not diagnosis codes. To qualify, the following must be documented:

    • Physician’s written order

    • Comprehensive PT/OT evaluation showing medical necessity and why a prefabricated option is insufficient

    • Evidence of pressure risk, sensory loss, or postural asymmetry (as outlined under the KX modifier criteria for E2609/E2617)

In short, reimbursement depends on clear clinical justification and documentation, not a specific ICD-10 code.

  • Matrix Seating USA guarantees the quality of its products.

    • Cushions, back supports, liners, and hardware are covered by a 5-year limited warranty.

    • Covers are covered by a 1-year limited warranty.

The warranty protects against defects in materials or workmanship under normal use. It does not cover wear and tears, misuse, or unauthorized modifications. Matrix Seating USA will repair or replace defective items at its discretion.

  • AIREZ and PROTEUS 3D printed products are designed for easy cleaning; unlike many competitor cushions, they can be safely soaked.

AIREZ/PROTEUS 3D Printed Products Cleaning Steps:

    • Remove the cover.

    • Place the cushion or back in a sink or tub with warm, soapy water and a mild detergent.

    • Swish and soak for at least 5 minutes.

    • Rinse thoroughly with clean water using a handheld shower or sink sprayer.

    • ⚠️ Do not use high-pressure spray equipment.

    • Gently shake off excess water and set the product level and upright on an absorbent surface to drain.

    • For faster drying, place in front of a fan.

    • Once dry, replace the cover.

    Cover Care:

    • Hand wash in warm water with mild detergent.

    • Hang to dry.

    PROTEUS Foam Products Cleaning Steps:

PROTEUS foam products must be cleaned utilizing a different method. Cleaning instructions for PU foam products:

    • Remove excess debris first.

    • Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent mixed with water.

    • Avoid strong solvents such as acetone and acids, as it will damage the foam structure.

    • Air dry the cushion/back support before replacing the cover.

  • ⚠️ Do not use isopropyl alcohol or chemical solvents on the cushion, back, or cover.

Chemical solvent dissolves or breaks down other substances. In cleaning products, solvents are often used to remove grease, oil, or adhesives, but they can also damage materials like elastomers, foams, or fabrics.

Common examples of chemical solvents include:

    • Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)

    • Acetone (found in nail polish remover)

    • Mineral spirits or paint thinner

    • Turpentine

    • Bleach

    • Ammonia-based cleaners

    • Hydrogen peroxide

These chemicals can cause discoloration, hardening, or degradation of cushion materials and covers, which is why Matrix Seating USA recommends using only mild soap and water for cleaning.
