The Difference between Cleaning and Disinfecting
Cleaning and disinfecting are not the same thing.
Cleaning removes visible dirt and contamination from a surface
Disinfecting kills bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that may remain after cleaning

The Clinical Advantage
For individuals who experience perspiration, bladder or bowel incontinence, or accidental spills, proper cleaning and disinfection are critical.
Unlike traditional foam seating, which can absorb moisture, body fluids, and cleaning solutions, the AIREZ elastomer lattice and nylon components are hydrophobic and non-absorbent. Fluids pass through the seating surface rather than becoming trapped within it.
The contaminants remain accessible for both cleaning and disinfection rather than becoming trapped deep within the seating material, allowing for more effective cleaning and disinfection.
This helps support:
Improved hygiene
Better microclimate management
Easier caregiver cleanup
Protection of wheelchair upholstery, hardware, and electronics
Long-term seating performance
Best Practice for CLEANING AIREZ 3D Printed Products:
Remove the cover.
Place the cushion or back in a sink or tub with warm, soapy water and a mild detergent.
Swish and soak for at least 5 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water using a handheld shower or sink sprayer.
Gently shake off excess water and set the product level and upright on an absorbent surface to drain.
For faster drying, place in front of a fan.
Once dry, replace the cover.
Cover Care:
Machine wash gentle, cold, with mild detergent. Do not bleach.
Hang to dry.

Use MadaCide-1 to Disinfect
MadaCide-1 is an EPA-registered, alcohol-free hospital disinfectant that is effective against a broad range of pathogens, including:
SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)
Influenza A
HIV-1
Hepatitis A, B, and C
MRSA
VRE
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB)
Numerous bacteria, fungi, and viruses commonly encountered in healthcare settings
Its alcohol-free, non-corrosive formula makes it well suited for repeated use on medical equipment and seating surfaces.
Best Practice for DISINFECTING AIREZ 3D Printed Products:
Remove the cover and liner.
Remove any visible debris or contamination.
Thoroughly spray the cushion, collection tray, back support, and exposed hardware with MadaCide-1.
Allow all surfaces to remain visibly wet for 10 minutes.
Wipe dry with a clean cloth.
Reassemble once all components are completely dry.
Don't Forget the Contact Time
A common mistake is spraying a disinfectant and immediately wiping it away. To achieve hospital-grade disinfection, MadaCide-1 must remain visibly wet on the surface for the manufacturer's recommended contact time of approximately 10 minutes.

Are there any chemicals I should avoid using to clean the cushions and back supports?
Chemical solvents dissolve or break down other substances. In cleaning products, solvents are often used to remove grease, oil, or adhesives, but they can also damage materials like elastomers, foams, or fabrics.
Common examples of chemical solvents include:
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
Acetone (found in nail polish remover)
Mineral spirits or paint thinner
Turpentine
Bleach
Ammonia-based cleaners
Hydrogen peroxide
These chemicals can cause discoloration, hardening, or degradation of cushion materials and covers, which is why Matrix Seating USA recommends using only mild soap and water for cleaning and MadaCide-1 for disinfecting.
Takeaway
A cleaner seating system isn't just about hygiene, it's about protecting the client, the caregiver, and the long-term performance of the seating system. When cleanliness, infection control, and moisture management matter, AIREZ is designed to make maintaining a safe and hygienic seating environment easier than ever.
Always follow the disinfectant manufacturer's instructions and your facility's infection-control policies when cleaning and disinfecting any seating system.
